Why you should treat yourself as you would treat a good friend
Feb 07, 2023When things are difficult or challenging, it can be easy to turn the blame on yourself and fall into a spiral of harsh self-criticism.
How do you talk to your friends if they are facing difficult times. Do you ignore how they're feeling or launch into criticism or lecturing? My guess is probably not. It is more likely that you take extra time and space to hug them, express concern, listen to them and ask how you can be supportive.
Why would you treat yourself any differently? You are worthy of kindness, compassion, and understanding, especially when you make mistakes.
How do you feel when a friend treats you with compassion and concern. The chances are things feel less overwhelming, more forgiving, calmer and more able to problem solve and take effective action if you need to.
Take heed of your own gentle advice, nurture that encouraging attitude towards yourself, and let it take the lead.
