Why embracing uncertainty is the key to change
Feb 13, 2023I love this quote from theoretical physicist, Richard Feynman.
In my work with people who experience long-standing challenges in their relationships with themselves and the people around them, I find his attitude of embracing uncertainty and endless curiosity vital.
When we are stuck in particular ways of being with ourselves or in our relationships, we tend to have rigid beliefs, about which we are very certain. Maybe we see ourselves as a failure, or view others as out to get us. Whatever the specific issue, our beliefs tend to be fixed and immovable.
To create change, we need to adopt the attitude of a scientist and an explorer, embracing uncertainty, actively experimenting with different ways of being, and allowing new experiences to inform the way we see ourselves, our relationships, and our world.
That might mean giving yourself opportunities to try new things and experience success or to allow yourself to do things that you might fail at and learn to view such failures with compassion and patience for yourself. You might need to experiment with sharing your true thoughts and feelings with someone close to see whether closeness and intimacy can be nurtured.
Whatever the outcome of trying new things, we can learn, grow and evolve. Sometimes, we might even create our own little Copernican Revolution, transforming the way we see ourselves and how we relate to our world.
What old ideas about yourself would you like to unmake your mind about? What new possibilities would you like to explore?
