Fighting "narcissists"?
Mar 29, 2023Those of us who seek to understand and identify narcissism in others may find ourselves dehumanising, othering, ignoring grey areas and sacrificing peoples' humanity and the truth.
At the heart of our humanity is an ability to connect, empathise and understand that every person, situation and relationship is unique. Ignoring this in favour of labelling and defining individuals with a single word is dehumanising - and can be damaging to those we label and ourselves. Whether it’s “psychopath” or “narcissist”, assigning a one-word diagnosis can be dangerous.
We aren’t defined by our ‘mad edges’ or our worst moments; life is filled with nuance and contradiction and complexity. It is easy to want to see the world in black and white, to have clarity and certainty but in labelling and boxing our fellow human beings in a box named "THE NARCISSIST", we risk dehumanising not just the other person, but ourselves in the process.
Sometimes we need to stop fighting monsters on the outside and start wrestling the demons within.
