Fear of vulnerability

Working with people who struggle with narcissism can feel like we are living in a world that demands strength and invulnerability above all else. We are taught from a young age to remain stoic against our emotions, to never let the cracks show — that if we do, we will be seen as weak and pitiful. But what Viktor Frankl, holocaust survivor and committed psychiatrist, reminds us, it requires great courage to attune to our pain and embrace our suffering. And in doing so, we can name and make meaning out of even the most harrowing of human circumstances.
