Compassion is not pity
Dec 27, 2022An appreciation of our common humanity is at the heart of compassion. Genuine compassion is not a great healer condescending to help the poor and needy. Nobody appreciates that kind of pity. Instead, it involves recognising our common humanity when we encounter suffering in ourselves or in others.
Many people I work with struggle with a sense of our shared humanity. Those struggling with issues of narcissism in themselves struggle to allow themselves to be human, to struggle and to lean on others. It can feel too much like condescension or pity.
Others struggle to recognise their own suffering and busy themselves being kind and caring to others but at a large cost to themselves. Neglecting ourselves to care for someone is not compassionate as it fails to include ourselves in the circle of compassion and as equally worthy of care and tenderness.
Of course, we face complicated and challenging situations where there are no easy ways to meet everyone's needs. However, a good starting point is recognising our shared humanity and that we all are worthy of care and support.
